As a distraction, someone threw him a piece of sugar cane. I've since learned that a better way to deal with an agitated monkey is to bare your teeth and/or raise and grab your foot as if you are going to remove your shoe to throw it. This is not as effective against the merchants who swarm when they see foreigners.
